Maybe you want to try yourself with the finalists of the 50th edition of Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens? Juvenia Krakow took second place in the International U19 tournament of this prestigious competition. “Young Dragons” defeated four teams from South Africa and only in the final they fell to beat Peregrines, losing 14:22 (14: 0).
Probably no one expected that a team from Poland, a country not even in tier 2 nations, is able to come this far. Meanwhile, young players from Krakow, after losing the opening match with last year’s finalists, Central SA Invitational, won two other group matches and advanced to the quarter-finals. There they again faced Central SA and this time proved to be better, winning 19:12.
In the semi-final, the Krakow team was losing 5:15 to North West Barbarians to score two crucial tries in the second half and advance to the grand final. The decisive clash took place on the main pitch of The Sevens Stadium, immediately after the game between Fiji and Canada. Juvenia started the match very well, after two hard-won tries leading 14:0. In the second half, young Poles felt the hardships of the tournament and made to many mistakes, which were used by a very experienced and high-level Peregrines team, scoring 4 tries and winning 22:14.
Despite losing, Juvenia achieved historical success for Polish rugby. It is worth noting that two months earlier, team won the Krakow Sevens tournament on its own pitch, defeating Denmark in the final. Danish team also competed in Dubai, finishing the competition in 14th place after several fierce matches at a very good level. The tournament in Poland was therefore a great preparation for duels in Dubai.
