It was two days of a great rugby festival. 13 teams from seven European countries competed on two pitches. We have experienced a fantastic perfect atmosphere, in the warm rays of the sun and among the smiles of all participants. Every participant of the tournament left Krakow happy and with good memories, regardless of the result achieved.
Two days of competition under the Lesser Poland sun was marked by sport emotions and a positive, international atmosphere. Saturday group matches were played at the Nowa Huta Rugby Klub stadium and Juvenii Kraków pitch. On Sunday, all teams came to Błonia to create a vibrant, rugby town. Thanks to the cooperation with the City of Krakow, the organizers could ensure the proper setting of the competition and the satisfaction of all participating teams.
In the group stage of the men’s tournament, the fiercest competition took place in group B at the NHRK stadium. Chmielnicki’s team from Ukraine advanced from the first place to the quarter-finals, despite being defeated by Vilnius Rugby Academy Seven. In the Group A, Juvenia fought hard against Denmark’s first team, winning 10: 7. It was a key meeting in the context of placing teams in the quarter finals.
On Sunday, Juvenia defeated the Hungarians from Honfoglalok and the Latvians from Livonia. In the final they met again with the first team of Denmark, which on the road to the decisive game, in a real horror defeated the Lithuanians. Their quarter-final clash ended in extra time, in which the judge gave them a penalty try for using legs in the defense of one of the Lithuanian players. Similarly, the Danes fought against Chmielnicki. The team from Ukraine finally lost and in the last game reached for bronze medals.
Juvenia dominated the rival in the final. Young Dragons scored three tries each half, giving only one to the rivals.
In the female tournament the most interesting duel of the main phase was the clash of Venol Atomówki Łódź with Vilniaus Regbio Akademija. Lithuanian lead 14: 0, but the Polish seven scored two tries in the second half. Unfortunately, the second conversion turned out to be inaccurate and the players from Vilnius enjoyed the minimal victory. Łódź players took revenge in the bronze final, defeating their rivals 31: 0 and jumping to the third step of the podium.
Juvenia rugby players were second to none. They won all four games scoring 118 points with only three tries lost. The most fierce battle took place in the finals with the Stade Rugby team from Vienna. The Austrians fiercely defended almost the entire first half and the young girls players of Łukasz Kościelniak found their way to the try line only seconds before the break. In the second half they broke the defense twice, winning the grand final 19: 0.
The main partner of the tournament was the City of Krakow, and the winners received the Cups of the President of the City of Krakow funded by Prof. Jacek Majchrowski. Individual prizes were also awarded for the most valuable players. They were received by Karolina Nowak and Igor Kocimski from Juvenia Kraków. The torunament ended with a concert of the band The Foreigners, which played live for all participants gathered on the field long after the medal ceremony.
– Just after the tournament we have heard very positive comments from the participants, so we will definitely organize another edition next year and hopefully Krakow Sevens will develop and gain more and more prestige within next years. In a few years, we want it to be an event that every club that runs youth sections will want to have in its calendar. Not only in Europe! – summed up Łukasz Kościelniak, who prepared Juvenia teams for the game, but also did a lot of organizational job.
